These include plant health care, lawn care, and pest control.
As you likely know, the same homeowners who care about having healthy trees on their property also care about how their plants perform, their lawn looks, and whether or not they have pests in and around their homes. That’s why these three add-on services make a tremendous amount of success.
In this article, we’ll talk about some of what you should expect when adding these revenue streams as well as how Joshua Tree Experts successfully did the same thing.
The biggest point that we can emphasize as you think about adding plant health care, lawn care, and pest control is that a gradual and deliberate move will best support your success. Oftentimes, where companies go wrong is that they try to jump into these additional services too quickly and they aren’t set up to support them.
That’s why we’re advising franchisees to follow the same business model that we did when we rolled in these additional offerings. Plant health care is the most natural add-on to your tree services and the best place to start. This will be introduced right away as you’re already working with clients to care for the trees on their property.
While they might have large trees that they want to be pruned or possibly removed, they likely also have smaller trees and shrubs on the property that they want to protect against insects and disease. This is where plant health care comes in.
Following the success with tree services and plant health care, then you’d gradually roll into lawn care. The key is to have some education and training underway so that you’re not just leaping into it. While there is certainly some crossover in the understanding, lawns have enough differences (from plants) that there are some new things to learn.
Actually, we find that plants are more complicated (just think about the sheer number of species…and then different diseases and pests), so once technicians have a good grasp on plant health care, then lawn care becomes less daunting.
Finally, after plant health care and lawn care are underway, you’d add pest control (again, having already prepared by doing some training and planning ahead of time).
An exact timeline for the rollout of these services is going to be franchise-dependent. We have formulated a KPI system in which we are tracking certain factors like growth profit margin, number of service calls, client retention rates, and a backlog of work. This information is absolutely critical in determining a franchise’s readiness to move into something new.
We want our franchisees to feel ready…not overburdened…by adding additional streams of revenue. We have a good understanding of what works and we’re here to set you up for success. We can’t emphasize enough how making the right moves at the right time is critical. Jumping too early into new services can lead to problems that otherwise could have been avoided.
Although it’s a positive move, we know that adding revenue streams is still a stressful endeavor. There are a lot of new things that come with that move, including new training needs. But that’s why it’s so important that you have support along the way.
We have already gone through this and we can counsel our franchises as they add plant health care, lawn care, and pest control to their service lineup. There is no reason you should feel as though you are on your own. We know exactly what’s needed in terms of training, experience, and ultimately success.
Another important point we want to make is that there are no additional franchise fees to add these additional services.
We don’t force additional training costs on you. These new services are wrapped into that original agreement and it is the goal for our franchisees to add them.
Your additional costs will be on the equipment.
As an estimate, the necessary lawn care equipment will likely be somewhere between $50,000 and $100,000.
The additional equipment costs for pest control are likely to be between $40,000 and $50,000.
Again, we know that adding the equipment for a brand-new service might feel daunting, but this is another area where you’ll have our full support. You will not have to figure out equipment needs on your own. We already have that information for you.
Any business owner can tell you that adding revenue streams is one of the best ways to grow a successful business. These additional services are ones that your existing clientele are already going to want…so adding them once you’ve built a relationship with clients makes a lot of sense.
But that doesn’t mean it’s not scary.
